Venice fest to launch cradle to screen lab

Initiative to pick projects for funding and mentoring

The Venice Film Festival will launch a film lab that intends to shepherd first works through their entire production cycle, from development through distribution.

Still-in-the works initiative will select 15 projects this summer, three of which it intends to screen on the Lido in 2013, having provided E150,000 ($190,000) in coin and also tutoring and mentoring from highly qualified industryites. Each proposed project must have a bona-fide producer attached.

“There is nothing like this anywhere in the world,” claimed Venice topper Alberto Barbera.

He said there are, of course, plenty of funds for first works everywhere; but nobody with the ambition to control a film’s complete cycle process from start to finish.

That said, the lab, being set up by Savina Neirotti, topper of the Turin Film Lab, will draw on bits of know-how from other entities that foster new generations of filmmakers, such as New York’s Independant Filmmaker Project (IFP), Turin, and the Sundance Institute.
