Venice fest to launch cradle to screen lab

Initiative to pick projects for funding and mentoring

The Venice Film Festival will launch a film lab that intends to shepherd first works through their entire production cycle, from development through distribution.

Still-in-the works initiative will select 15 projects this summer, three of which it intends to screen on the Lido in 2013, having provided E150,000 ($190,000) in coin and also tutoring and mentoring from highly qualified industryites. Each proposed project must have a bona-fide producer attached.

“There is nothing like this anywhere in the world,” claimed Venice topper Alberto Barbera.

He said there are, of course, plenty of funds for first works everywhere; but nobody with the ambition to control a film’s complete cycle process from start to finish.

That said, the lab, being set up by Savina Neirotti, topper of the Turin Film Lab, will draw on bits of know-how from other entities that foster new generations of filmmakers, such as New York’s Independant Filmmaker Project (IFP), Turin, and the Sundance Institute.

Full details will be disclosed at the Venice lineup presser July 26.
