Variety fetes Studiocanal topper

Olivier Courson receives Achievement in International Film Award

Olivier Courson, Studiocanal chairman-CEO, accepted Variety’s 2012 Achievement in International Film Award on Friday at a Baoli beach cocktail-luncheon sponsored by Chopard.

He noted that the French giant was like a big family throughout the world, referring to the many director, producer and agent partners in and outside France that have helped Studiocanal become a pan-European film studio.

Many of these were on hand to see Courson pick up Variety’s highest accolade in international filmmaking, presented by executive editor Steven Gaydos. Among them were Canal Plus topper Bertrand Meheut, producer Philippe Rousselet, writer/producer Luc Bossi, producer Jean-Baptiste Dupont, financier Leo Glowinski, nWave Pictures’ Ben Stassen, Quinta Communication’s Ali Jaafar, Terra Mater head Walter Kohler, producer Sophokles Tasioulis and Cannes Market topper Jerome Paillard.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to be here as the sun is just coming out for this event. That’s the power of Studiocanal in France and the world,” said Gaydos, referencing the intermittent rain.

Over the last six years under Courson, Studiocanal has evolved a sustainable studio model that allows it to produce, co-finance, distribute and sell significant movies without taking on the huge distribution costs of the Hollywood majors: It’s a hallmark that factored significantly in the Variety award.

But Studiocanal exercises its power with a light touch.

“What really strikes me about Studiocanal is team leadership, having strategy, an inspirational leader,” Gaydos said.

Most of the Studiocanal team took to the stage for a group photo and then enjoyed champagne and cuisine supervised by Michelin two-star chef Bruno Oger.
