U.K.’s Dogwoof nabs ‘Bananas!,’ ‘Putin’s Kiss’

Sundance docus slated for summer release

LONDON — U.K. specialty distrib Dogwoof has snapped up Brit rights to Fredrik Gertten’s “Big Boys Gone Bananas!” and Lise Birk Pedersen’s “Putin’s Kiss” at the Sundance Film Festival.

Dogwoof did a deal directly with Gertten and WG Film for “Big Boys Gone Bananas!,” which sees Dole Food Company wage a campaign to prevent a pair of Swedish filmmakers from showing their original docu, “Bananas!,” about a lawsuit against the company.

Dogwoof distributed “Bananas!” in the U.K. in 2010.

Docu “Putin’s Kiss” follows the story of a young Russian student debating whether to stay with the patriotic youth movement Nashi or join the liberal opposition.

Deal was negotiated by DR Sales and Dogwoof’s head of distribution Oli Harbottle.

“It’s wonderful to add two such important and timely films to the Dogwoof roster,” said Harbottle in a statement. “Both films carry similar messages and display Dogwoof’s dedication not only to the documentary genre, but also films which are trying to make a difference.”

Both pics are slated for a summer 2012 release in Blighty.
