‘Twilight’ fan killed in Comic-Con car crash

Woman was crossing street outside convention center

A 53-year old woman in San Diego to attend Comic-Con was struck and killed by a motorist Tuesday as she tried to cross the street in front of the San Diego Convention Center, police said.

The woman tripped and hit the car while crossing at the intersection of 5th and Harbor, the central thoroughfare between the complex and the adjacent Gaslamp District. The driver, a 67-year-old man, remained at the scene, was cooperative and was not at fault, San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said.

Police did not identify the woman, but “Twilight” fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts and grieve, with one posting a photo purported to be the woman, who had been waiting in line for Thursday’s panel for “The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn — Part 2.” Another, who said she had been with the victim, asserted that she was leaving the Convention Center area at the time of the accident — not rushing to get in line as some had suggested.

The annual fanboy confab gets under way Thursday, though fans in recent years have started camping outside the venue days before to assure a good spot inside Hall H.

Lionsgate and Summit, which are releasing the final “Twilight” film Nov. 16, issued a statement in response: “Lionsgate, Summit and the entire Twilight community are saddened by the death of a Comic-Con fan today due to a traffic accident during the hours leading up to this year’s convention in San Diego. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends. She will be respectfully remembered this Thursday in Hall H.”
