“The Artist and the Model,” Fernando Trueba’s follow-up to the Oscar-nommed animation feature “Chico & Rita,” continues to roll out foreign sales, having closed Germany and Austria with Camino and Brazil with Europe Filmes.
Largely in French, the drama is sold by Spain’s 6 Sales.
Cohen Media Group announced at Toronto it had acquired North American rights and will campaign for a Golden Globe nom; Bac Films has closed France.
“Model” stars France’s Jean Rochefort as an aging, world-weary sculptor in 1943 war-ravaged France who suddenly discovers a reason to live when he meets a beautiful young escapee from a Spanish internment camp (Aida Folch), who agrees to pose as his model.
Written with Luis Bunuel co-scribe Jean-Claude Carriere and shot in black-and-white, “Model” won Trueba — whose “Belle Epoque” took an Academy Award — the best director nod at September’s San Sebastian Festival.
