The Weinstein Company is hoping to get back in the awards biz, this time with director John Hillcoat’s prohibition-era thriller “Lawless.”
Featuring an all-star cast including Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Mia Wasikowska and Gary Oldman, “Lawless” will play in competition next month at the Cannes Film Festival before opening Stateside on August 31.
Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce co-star in the drama.
Originally dubbed “The Wettest County,” the gangster film was initially slated for release April 20 before TWC pushed back the date after playing well in test screenings.
The film, based on the novel by Matt Bondurant and adapted by Nick Cave, centers on brother bootleggers (LaBeouf and Hardy) who take the law into their own hands during the Depression.
