The Toronto Film Festival has tweaked its program strands and team and added the Bloor Hot Docs cinema to its venue roster for the event’s 37th edition, to be held Sept. 6-16.
Midnight Madness programmer Colin Geddes, who has helped build the latenight showcase into a buyer destination, adds the Vanguard strand of edgy fare to his duties.
Wavelengths, programmed by Andrea Picard, will now include shorts as well as features that would have previously screened in the now-defunct Visions.
And Real to Reel has been rechristened with the more prosaic label TIFF Docs. It’s programmed by Thom Powers, who also handles the Mavericks onstage filmmaker talks.
Rounding out the team programming international features are festival artistic director Cameron Bailey (South Asia, the Caribbean, U.S., Western Europe), Dimitri Eipides (Europe, Central Asia), Giovanna Fulvi (East and Southeast Asia), festival CEO Piers Handling (Italy, Poland, U.S.), festival COO Michele Maheux (Ireland, U.K., U.S.), Rasha Salti (African, Middle East), Diana Sanchez (Spain, Portugal, Latin America) and Jane Schoettle (Australia, New Zealand, Israel and U.S. independents).
Steve Gravestock programs films from Scandinavia, Netherlands and the Philippines and oversees the Canadian feature roster with Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo; Canadian shorts are programmed by Alex Rogalski and Magali Simard.
The new TIFF Cinematheque is a curated program of titles from the history of Canadian and international cinema.
The recently renovated 710-seat Bloor cinema, a popular fest venue in the 1980s, is now the year-round venue for the Hot Docs festival.
“With an emphasis on Vanguard films and documentaries, we think our audience will love seeing smart, hip festival films in a grand neighborhood cinema,” Bailey said.
