Toronto critics bow to ‘The Master’

It nabs picture, director, screenplay, supporting actor

TORONTO — Helmer-scribe Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” commanded the Toronto Film Critics’ Assn. awards, nabbing honors for picture, director, screenplay and supporting actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman, it was announced this morning.

At a vote held on Sunday, the 45-member org named Denis Lavant best actor for his spin in Leos Carax’s “Holy Motors,” and Rachel Weisz best actress for her turn in Terence Davies’ “The Deep Blue Sea.”

Gina Gershon won best supporting actress for William Friedkin’s “Killer Joe.”

Michael Haneke’s “Amour” took best foreign-language film, while Chris Butler and Sam Fell’s “ParaNorman” nabbed best animated feature.

Panos Cosmatos’ “Beyond the Black Rainbow” and Benh Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild” tied for best first feature, while Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell” won the Allan King Documentary Award for feature docu.

Polley’s film, Michael Dowse’s “Goon” and Denis Cote’s “Bestiare” are nominated for best Canadian feature, to be announced at the Jan. 8 TFCA awards gala in Toronto. The director of the winning pic will take home a $100,000 cash prize, now Canada’s richest arts awards thanks to a boost from long-time TFCA awards sponsor Rogers Communications.
