'Ugly Betty' thesp to play Miami cop in Par crime tale
“Ugly Betty” star Tony Plana has joined the cast of the Paramount pic “Pain and Gain,” which Michael Bay is directing from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
Based on a true story, film stars Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Mackie and Dwayne Johnson as bodybuilders who engage in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida.
Plana will play Capt. Al Lopez of the Miami Police Dept., who begins to look into the kidnapping of Marc Schiller (Tony Shalhoub) at the urging of his old friend, private detective Ed Du Bois (Ed Harris).
Rob Corddry and Israeli model Bar Paly co-star in the pic, which Bay is producing with Donald De Line and Ian Bryce.
Plana, who played America Ferrera’s father, Ignacio Suarez, on ABC’s “Ugly Betty,” recently appeared on the network’s “Desperate Housewives” and directed an episode of the hit series. He co-starred in the indie “Life Is Hot in Cracktown” and will next be seen alongside Ernest Borgnine in “The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.”
Plana is repped by APA.
