Large-screen exhib targets family, fanboy auds with 3D pic

Imax has found the ideal marriage between family and fanboy in Tim Burton’s 3D animated film “Frankenweenie,” which will get the Imax treatment when Disney bows the film worldwide on Oct. 5.

The mega-screen exhib, which recently transitioned away from releasing family films, has focused its efforts almost exclusively on genre fare.

“Frankenweenie” — the stop-motion feature remake of Burton’s 1984 live-action short — is a fanboy film, based on widespread Burton enthusiasts and the original’s cult-like popularity. But parents and kids should also spark to the 3D toon.

“Imax has a long-standing relationship with Tim Burton, whose artistic vision and brilliant storytelling has captured the imagination of audiences around the world,” said Imax prexy Greg Foster.

“Frankenweenie” marks the fourth Burton-directed film to go through Imax, and the second this year, after Warner Bros.’ “Dark Shadows” launches May 11.
