Valentine’s Day audiences flocked to Sony-Screen Gems’ “The Vow,” shelling out $11.6 million – a record-breaking mid-week take for the holiday.
“The Vow” handily beat the previous best non-weekend performer on Valentine’s Day, 2005’s “Hitch,” which grossed $7.5 million.
In a boffo run-up to the holiday, the Canning Tatum-Rachel McAdams weeper grossed a chart-topping $41.2 million in three days, attracting a dominant share of female moviegoers. Domestic cume was $56.1 million in five days.
Warner Bros. holds the holiday’s biggest single-day gross to date, with 2010’s “Valentine’s Day” at $23.4 million. That pic, which debuted to $63.1 million – a four-day President’s Day weekend record – and cumed $110.5 million domestically, benefited from its namesake holiday falling on a Sunday.
Also benefiting from Tuesday’s holiday theater traffic, CBS Films’ femme-targeted scarer “The Woman in Black” collected $1.6 million, up a whopping 191% over the previous day’s grosses.
In its second week, “Woman” reached a Stateside tally of $37.5 million.
