‘The Dark Knight Rises’ – Produced by Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven & Emma Thomas

Eye on the Oscars: Best Picture

ORIGINS: “‘The Dark Knight Rises’ came to be as a result of Chris (Nolan’s) wish to complete the story that he had begun in ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight.’ Whilst we were completely satisfied with those films, it felt as though our version of the Bruce Wayne/Batman story had a beginning, a middle, but no end, and we wanted to bring it to a fitting conclusion,” Thomas says.

FINANCING: Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures reteamed to co-finance the massive sequel.

HIGH HURDLES: “Chris envisioned an epic tale on an extremely grand scale, and it was logistically and financially very hard to deliver for him.”

DOMINO EFFECT: “Inception” served as an audition of sorts for franchise newbies Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. That left only Anne Hathaway for Nolan to cast in the pic’s tricky Catwoman role.
