Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan gross $8 million in first day
In advance of its Stateside release on May 4, Disney-Marvel’s “The Avengers” kickstarted its worldwide run Wednesday in Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan, grossing almost $8 million collectively from those three territories.
In Oz, the film collected the country’s second-highest opening day tally ever with $6 million, behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” (New Zealand contributed an additional $700,000.)
“The Avengers” grossed $1.2 million in Taiwan, making it the best-ever Wednesday opening in that market. It’s also the second-highest opening day for a Marvel film (Spider-Man 3 holds that record, having bowed on a national holiday).
“Avengers” bows this weekend in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Latin America and numerous other territories.
