The R-rated newcomers are swearing and stripping on top of the domestic B.O. this weekend, close enough to cause concern for “Ted’s” as-yet-unquestioned dominance.Universal’s “Ted” earned $20.2 million on Friday for an estimated three-day haul of $51.4 million complemented by an anticipated pair of long legs. But just a stone’s throw behind, Warner Bros.’ “Magic Mike” earned $19.4 million. “Magic Mike” slightly overperformed expectations that had its opening day in the low teens as late as midday Friday. However, while the pic nearly broke the $20 million mark, B.O. pundits expect “Mike” to be a fairly front-loaded affair. It’s only just trailing “Ted” now, but insiders expect that gap to widen with “Ted” trumping “Mike” by $10 million through Sunday. Elsewhere, Lionsgate’s “Madea’s Witness Protection” tied with Disney-Pixar’s “Brave” Friday, each with $10.3 million, the former in its opening weekend and the latter in its soph sesh. And finally, Disney-Dreamworks’ “People Like Us” is disappointing at the bottom of the heap. With $1.4 million from Friday, the drama will be lucky to hit mid-single digits this frame.
