Synecdoche boards ‘Last of the Unjust’

Lanzmann docu centers on Theresienstadt

French producers David Frenkel and Arno Moria’s Synecdoche has boarded “Le Dernier des injustes” (The Last of the Unjust), a feature documentary penned and helmed by filmmaker and journalist Claude Lanzmann, whose credits include “Shoah,” the nine-and-a-half hour Holocaust docu.

“Unjust” centers on Theresienstadt, a concentration camp for upper-class Jews in Terezín, located in what is now the Czech Republic. It was presented by the Nazis as a model Jewish settlement for propaganda purposes.

The docu will focus on Benjamin Murmelstein, an Austrian Jew appointed by Adolf Eichmann, Hitler’s top-ranking Nazi SS officer, as head of the Jewish Council of Elders ruling over Theresienstadt. He was feared by the prisoners but, because he was trusted by the Nazis, he reportedly managed to save the lives of 17,000 Jews.

“Unjust” will feature interviews with Theresienstadt survivors and with Murmelstein himself, whom Lanzmann followed for a week in 1975 while preparing “Shoah.”

Lensing will start this summer in Israel and will go on to Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy. Docu is budgeted at €2.5 million ($3.2 million).

Le Pacte and Dor Film are co-producing. Le Pacte will distribute in Gaul and rep worldwide sales.
