Submarine, Music Box partner on cult pics

Shingles to distribute remastered 'Wild Style,' 'Downtown 81' on 30th anni

Submarine Entertainment has partnered with Music Box Films to distribute two digitally remastered cult classics — Charlie Ahearn’s “Wild Style” and Edo Bertoglio’s “Downtown 81” — celebrating their 30th anniversary release, it was announced Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The deals were negotiated by Submarine’s David Koh, Dan Braun and Josh Braun on behalf of the filmmakers and Music Box prexy William Schopf and managing director Ed Arentz.

Submarine, which supervised the recent remastering of the films with the filmmakers, has sold rights to both titles to Films We Like in Canada and Parco in Japan, and is selling worldwide rights in Toronto and upcoming markets.

Widely regarded as the first hip-hop movie, “Wild” features a stellar cast of Bronx music and street culture pioneers; “Downtown” is a unique snapshot of Manhattan’s post-punk subculture and its leading creative lights.

Submarine is also working on remastering other cult titles to be announced shortly.
