Strand takes U.S. on ‘White Elephant’

Pablo Trapero's drama premiered at Cannes

Strand Releasing acquired U.S. rights to Pablo Trapero’s “White Elephant” from Wild Bunch on Thursday as the Argentine drama was having its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. 

Film stars Ricardo Darin and Jeremie Renier as priests helping local people in the slums of Buenos Aires who get caught amid the violence of the drug cartels. Martina Gusman, who has previously starred in Trapero’s “Lion’s Den” and “Carancho,” also stars.

“White Elephant” world preemed in May at the Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard. Strand plans a 2013 release.

It’s the third TIFF deal for Strand following acquisitions of “In the Fog” and the “Paradise” trilogy.

The “Elephant” deal was done between Wild Bunch’s Carole Baraton and  Strand Releasing’s Marcus Hu.
