Acquires U.S. rights to 'California Solo'

Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Marshall Lewy’s “California Solo,” two months after its world premiere at Sundance in January, and plans for a fall theatrical release.

“Solo” stars Robert Carlyle as a former Britpop rocker-turned-farm worker who gets caught driving drunk, leading to possible deportation after living in Los Angeles for 20 years.

Film is produced by Mynette Louie, whose credits include “Children of Invention” and “Stones in the Sun.” It’s co-produced by Ross Girard who is currently an inhouse producer for Michel Gondry’s Partizan, and exec produced by Carlyle, Joan Huang of Cherry Sky Films, and Rick Rosenthal and Nick Morton of Whitewater Films.

Pic was written and directed by Lewy, and also stars Alexia Rasmussen, Kathleen Wilhoite, A Martinez, Michael Des Barres, and Danny Masterson.

The deal for the film was negotiated by Jon Gerrans of Strand and Ryan Kampe of Visit Films.
