‘Spider-Man’ soars on Fourth with $23.4 mil

Pic scores second only to 'Transformers' for holiday

After two days of solid playtime, Sony is aiming its webslinger a little higher for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” with six-day expectations between $120 million and $130 million vs. the studio’s earlier $110 million-plus prediction.

“Spider-Man,” which scored the highest Tuesday gross ever at $35.9 million, swung into the Fourth of July with $23.4 million, marking the holiday’s second-best take, behind $29.1 million for 2007’s “Transformers.”

In two days (including $7.5 million from mid grosses), “Spider-Man” has grossed a boffo $59.3 million domestically. That puts the film a touch behind “Transformers,” which earned $65.8 million in its first two days, including an added $8.8 million from evening showtimes earned the day before it opened wide.

“Transformers” tallied $155 million in its first six days, a figure it seems “Spider-Man” is unlikely to attain.

“Spider-Man” still should impress this weekend globally, thanks to a sizable overseas rollout throughout Europe and Australia. The film already collected more than $50 million through last weekend in nearly every Asian territory except China.

Bowing Thursday at 2,730 U.S. locations, Paramount’s “Katy Perry: Part of Me” is expected to hit in the low-to-mid teens over four days. Pic earned $200,000 from just 100 advanced screenings on Monday, as an effort to kickstart word-of-mouth among Perry’s hardcore fans.

Universal’s R-rated Oliver Stone crime thriller “Savages” opens wide today, looking to target a primarily adult crowd. The film is expected to land in the low teens through Sunday.

A pair of specialty titles expand aggressively today: Sony Pictures Classics’ Woody Allen-helmed “To Rome With Love” adds nearly 800 locations, while Fox Searchlight broadens “Beasts of the Southern Wild” to 19 locations, up from seven locations on Wednesday and Thursday (pic bowed last weekend at four).
