Sony, RTL ink exclusive volume deal

Agreement includes 'Elysium,' 'White House Down'

BERLIN — Sony Pictures Television has inked an exclusive volume deal with RTL Germany for a number of high-profile films and TV series, including the free TV premieres of Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi thriller “Elysium” and Roland Emmerich’s “White House Down.”

The agreement also includes “The Smurfs 2” as well as library titles such as “The Da Vinci Code,” “Hancock” and a selection from the “Spider-Man” and “Men in Black” franchises.

The multi-year deal will cover German free TV rights to theatrical releases as of 2013 and TV series beginning with the 2013 fall season in addition to library titles.

Kerstin Guehne, VP, distribution, SPT Germany, described RTL Germany as “an important strategic partner” whose platforms offered “optimal positioning” for Sony product.

Joerg Graf, RTL Germany’s head of programming acquisitions, said the volume deal was in line with the group’s plan to increase investment in new content.

RTL Germany also has agreements with Warner Bros., NBCUniversal, Disney, Studiocanal and EuropaCorp.
