Dreamworks Animation event gathers filmmakers

Execs, directors and animators alike came together June 13 at WeHo’s Eveleigh for the first-ever Dreamworks Animation Summer Social.

“Everyone’s overjoyed and relieved … some of us are doing the ‘Afro-clown’ dance,” said Bill Damaschke said, cheekily referencing the company’s newest hit, “Madagascar 3.” Others simply found the gathering to be a nice – and deserved – break from work.

“Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’re grinding it out,” said Gabe Hordos, head of character animation on new pic “Rise of the Guardians.” “You almost start forgetting your friends and stuff. This is nice.”

Helmer Simon Smith mentioned a “top-secret project” he just couldn’t divulge.

But, “He’ll be talking after a couple of beers,” quipped Patrick Hanenburger, production designer on “Guardians.”
