Snapshots from three recent shoots

Scout & About: Massachusetts 2012

Grown Ups 2
Director: Dennis Dugan
Starring: Adam Sandler, Taylor Lautner, Salma Hayek
Budget: $70 million (estimated)
Locations: The North Shore, including Swampscott and Marblehead. “Ninety percent of the movie is being done here,” says executive producer Barry Bernardi.
Why Massachusetts? Star Adam Sandler is a repeat visitor to the area, having grown up in neighboring New Hampshire. The original “Grown Ups.” also starring Sandler, was shot in the state, too. “New England is in Adam’s blood,” says Bernardi. Plus, return business means the production has already invested in what crew to hire and where to find locations. “We have a lot of crew retention and loyalty on both sides,” says Bernardi. “You don’t lose anything by coming to Massachusetts from Hollywood,” he says of the 2,592-mile nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Boston. “We love coming back because we keep having good experiences.”

The Way, Way Back
Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash
Starring: Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette
Budget: Less than $5 million
Locations: South Shore; Marshfield, Wareham
Why Massachusetts? With a low-budget film, you listen when your star talks. Steve Carell has a house in the state and requested that the production shoot there rather than in North Carolina, another state known for its attractive tax breaks. Incentives, of course, play an even bigger role for smaller picture. Plus, Massachusetts provides many advantages in addition to the budgetary variety: In addition to the tax rebate “there’s a big city you can fly in and out of easily, a big crew base — and everything is user-friendly,” says line producer George Parra. “It’s kind of a no-brainer.” Parra liked it so much he’s considering bringing another production to the state. “If it fits the story, I would absolutely recommend Massachusetts.”

The Heat
Director: Paul Feig
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Demian Bichir
Budget: Less than $40 million (estimated)
Locations: In and around Boston and Cambridge
Why Massachusetts? One of the film’s lead characters, played by McCarthy, is from Boston, which made basing the film in Beantown a necessity from a story standpoint. But “the studio probably would have not allowed us to come here, even though it is the best place for it, if there had been no incentives,” says executive producer Michele Imperato. Fortunately, incentives made the difference. One small snag: Massachusetts was so busy when the production arrived that it was hard to find local crew. That aside, says Imperato, filming in Boston “adds such richness to the movie — we prepped the movie in half the time that we normally would, and the city picked up the pace to accommodate us.”
