Sony actioner earns $3.1 mil; Gerard Butler romcom expected to disappoint with $6 mil for weekend
A dreary December sesh left Friday wide open for “Skyfall” to claim victory. In its fifth Friday in theaters, Sony’s actioner grossed another $3.1 million for a lifetime cume of $253.7 million to date. The frame’s only newcomer, FilmDistrict’s “Playing for Keeps,” seemed destined for disappointment a long way out. The December romantic comedy that centers on soccer rather than the holiday was pulled forward to this frame to avoid the Christmas competish, which will work in its benefit if only a little. “Keeps” took $2.1 million Friday, and should earn close to $6 million through Sunday. Besides “Skyfall,” which may win the weekend over Summit’s “Twilight” finale without even breaking $10 million, the burden of this frame will be shouldered by the usual suspects: “Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” which earned $2.8 million Friday, will probably take second with close to $9 million and Disney’s “Lincoln,” which earned $2.6 million Friday, will land a little behind. The specialty B.O. is looking at a little boost this frame with attention off the major releases and awards season around the corner. Still in modest release, both Weinstein Co.’s “Silver Linings Playbook” and Fox Searchlight’s “Hitchcock” saw healthy $1,730 and $1,093 per screen averages respectively Friday, the latter after bumping its location count up by 133.
