‘Sky’ the limit for Sony

Bondpic is highest-grossing ever for Sony, MGM

In just seven weeks of global play, “Skyfall,” with $918 million worldwide as of Dec. 9, became the highest-grossing pic ever for Sony and MGM — and is headed toward becoming the first-ever billion-dollar grosser for either studio.

The 23rd James Bond film — a joint venture between Sony and MGM — reached a whopping $656.7 million overseas and $261 million domestically, both of which are benchmark tallies for the 50-year-old franchise.

“Skyfall” passed the previous Sony record holdover, “Spider-Man 3,” which grossed $890 million globally in 2007. Meanwhile, MGM’s top title previously was “Gone With the Wind,” at $400 million worldwide. Adjusted for inflation, however, the 1939 pic stands as the highest-grossing film of all time industrywide.

Sony launched the Bondpic internationally two weeks before the U.S., looking to capitalize on overseas holidays, as well as to distance the film from other tentpoles such as “Twilight” and “The Hobbit,” which bowed the weekend of Dec. 14 in 55 day-and-date territories.

“Skyfall” has yet to receive a release date in China, though it’ll likely bow there sometime late January or early February. Grosses on the mainland should push the pic past $1 billion globally — that’s if it hasn’t already reached the milestone by then.

“Skyfall” likely will fall drastically with the bow of “The Hobbit,” even with heightened holiday moviegoing.
