Affleck's 'Argo' starts strong with $5.9 mil; 'Transylvania' set to cross $100 mil this frame
Halloween’s come early at the domestic B.O. as Summit’s “Sinister” prevailed on Friday with $7.5 million.
However, despite leaving the gate with a slight edge over last weekend’s champ, Fox’s “Taken 2” with $7 million from Friday, scarers are traditionally front-loaded affairs and the Liam Neeson-starrer is expected to overtake it. “Taken 2” is looking at a three-day in the low $20 million range while “Sinister” will likely lag to the high teens.
To date, “Taken 2” has cumed $71.3 million. It won’t be crossing the $100 million milestone this frame, but Sony carryover “Hotel Transylvania” — which earned $4.2 million Friday and has cumed $89 million domestically thus far — will top $100 million by Monday.
In third, Ben Affleck-helmed “Argo” grossed $5.9 million. The political thriller is tracking nicely with adults, which should bode well for its legs, but it won’t cause any upsets this weekend. Pic is expected to top out just behind “Sinister” in the high teens.
The frame’s other two newcomers, Sony’s “Here Comes the Boom” and CBS Films’ “Seven Psychopaths,” earned $3.6 million and $1.4 million, respectively. “Psychopaths,” currently in ninth, is trying a semi-limited rollout with 1,480 locations before it expands on the 26th.
Finally, Atlas Media’s “Atlas Shrugged: Part II” opened at an aggressive 1,012 locations and will likely disappoint like its predecessor. It earned about $700K on Friday, and is looking at a three-day take just south of $2 million.
