Screen Media Films has set seven films for release in the spring and summer including Mike Wallis’ Western “Good for Nothing” and Matt D’Elia’s comedy “American Animal.”
Suzanne Blech, tapped as president in September, made the announcement Wednesday. She’ll also be at Sundance in an acquisitions capacity.
“2012 will be a year where we focus on quality niche films including festival darlings, documentaries, foreign, urban and Latino – basically what we see as underserved demographics in the US,” she said. “We plan to release a minimum of 12 films theatrically and an additional 30 movies direct to the marketplace.”
Screen Media also announced it’s promoted Tom Yagielski to VP Domestic Distribution, Theatrical/Home Entertainment and hired former Lionsgate acquisitions staffer Seth Needle as Acquisitions & Marketing Manager.
Screen Media hasn’t yet set specific dates for releases. The other spring titles include Remi Bezancon’s “A Happy Event,” which screened at the Toronto Film Festival in September; “La’Assault,” directed by Julien LeClerq and centered on the December 1994 terrorist hijacking of an Air France flight; and “Maimtas,” a coming-of-age film directed by Nicholas Ozeki which follows two Latino youths from different backgrounds.
Summer releases include “Wild Horse Wild Ride,” a docu directed by Alex Dawson about the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge; and “Snow on Tha Bluff,” directed by Damon Russell about Curtis Snow, who stole in a dope deal and made a documentary about his life.
Screen Media’s 2011 titles included “3 Backyards,” “White Irish Drinkers,” “The Lie” and the documentary “JIG: Irish Dance.”
