‘Sauce’ spices up Kustendorf

Pomares' doc wins top honor at Kusturica's fest

Mokra Gora, Serbia — Tyro Spanish filmmaker Fernando Pomares’ true crime documentary, “Alto Sauce,” won the top prize at helmer Emir Kusturica’s 5th Kustendorf Film Festival.

Silver prize went to coming-of-ager “Boys, Where are You?” Serbian thesp Jelena Gavrilovic’s directing debut, while Polish first-time helmer Piotr Subbotko took bronze with soccer tale “Glasgow.”

The jury was led by Iranian thesp Leila Hatami, who stars in Asghar Farhadi’s foreign-language Oscar hopeful, “A Separation.”

She also captivated auds with one of many workshops held in the tiny mountain village, 125 miles southwest of Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, that Kusturica had built as a set for his “Life is a Miracle” in 2004.

Fest exposes tyro filmmakers, mainly students, to greats in their field for a week.

This year’s industryites were Cannes winner Kim Ki-duk, who screened “Arirang,” French thesp Isabelle Huppert, U.S. filmmaker Abel Ferrara (“4:44 Last Day on Earth”), French Iranian expat helmer Marjane Satrapi (“Chicken With Plums”), Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (“The Kid With a Bike”) and Turkey’s Nuri Bilge Ceylan (“Once Upon a Time in Anatolia”).

“I don’t really have a style,” Ceylan told auds Sunday. “We work on something and eventually something happens.”

Fest ended with all-night dancing to Balkan bands after festgoers downed copious amounts of plum vodka — Coca-Cola and corporate sponsors are barred.
