Sarasota sets 2012 slate

Competition films named for festival

The Sarasota Film Festival has set its final slate of some 230 shorts and features, including 14 pics that are world or U.S. preems.

Among features, the world preems are clustered in the Independent Visions competish with a nine-film lineup including bows of Kris Swanberg’s “Empire Builder,” Onur Tukel’s “Richard’s Wedding” and Dan Sallitt’s “The Unspeakable Act.”

Narrative feature contest will screen eight movies including Julia Loktev’s “The Loneliest Planet,” Mia Hanse-Love’s “Goodbye First Love,” Wang Xiaoshuai’s “11 Flowers” and, in its U.S. preem, Olivia Silver’s “Arcadia.” Doc competish slate, meanwhile, includes Jeff Orlowski’s “Chasing Ice,” Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s “Detropia” and Bess Kargman’s “First Position.”

The 14th annual Florida fest also will be the first since striking a formal partnership with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts to showcase student films during the fest.

Sarasota Film Festival kicks off April 13 with opener “Robot and Frank.”
