Sarah Hyland: Kidney condition led to Lopez Foundation

Youth Impact Report 2012: Power of Youth Honorees

WHO: Best known as Haley Dunphy, the big sister on “Modern Family,” Sarah Hyland can be seen in two upcoming features: Lionsgate laffer “Gay Dude” and coming-of-age comedy “Struck by Lightning” opposite Chris Colfer and Allison Janney.

WHAT: The Lopez Foundation was founded in December 2009 by comedian George Lopez to create positive, permanent change for underprivileged children, adults and military families confronting challenges in education and health, as well as increasing community awareness about kidney disease and organ donation. Lopez underwent a kidney transplant in 2005.

WHY: Earlier this year, Hyland said she has a condition known as kidney dysplasia, which required her to undergo a kidney transplant in April. “When I was a child, I was unable to go to any type of sleepaway summer camp because of health issues,” she says. “Once I learned about the Lopez Foundation, I knew I wanted to get involved (because they) send kids with kidney disease away to camp so they can still experience overnight camp with medical needs at hand.” Hyland now serves as the foundation’s youth ambassador.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Kidney Disease and Transplant Family Weekend at the Painted Turtle from Nov. 16-18.
