Eye on the Oscars: The Director

Making his narrative debut with the story behind the legendary director’s taboo-breaking “Psycho,” Gervasi (“Anvil!”) landed a dream cast. Upon meeting Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren, the humbled helmer decided the best plan was to listen as his stars read their first scene. “I finally plucked up the courage to offer Helen Mirren a suggestion,” he recalls. When the tip worked, “She turned to Tony and said, ‘I think he might be all right, darling.’ We all laughed. We were on our way.”
