David Rand is launching Los Angeles-based Grand Entertainment Group, touting the company as a multiplatform distributor and content developer for the indie sector.Rand, who’s chairman-CEO, has served as an exec at Lionsgate, ThinkFilm, Image Entertainment and Maya Entertainment. The management team includes former Image exec Richard Buchalter, who’s VP of sales, and former Maya exec Gina Gilardi as VP of marketing. GEG will distribute DVD, digital, streaming, TV and limited theatricals for all types of Independent films including features, documentaries, genre and children’s programming. “The timing is perfect for Grand,” Rand said. “The market for indie films is still very strong, especially since the bigger players are not interested unless it has a big budget or big stars. The consumer still wants to see something new and different and to be honest something that has a little different formula than the usual fair of films in the market.” Grand’s first two films will be released Aug. 14, with two to five films per month distributed domestically. Plans are to expand into international distribution in 2013.
