Producers Lab set for Toronto

Co-production event hosts 24 int'l producers

BERLIN — The third edition of Producers Lab Toronto will take place during the Toronto Film Festival from Sept. 5-8 with 24 European and Canadian producers looking for co-production partners.

The program selects 12 producers from Europe and 12 from Canada to take part in the three-day event and exchange stories, ideas and information on funding and co-production on both sides of the Atlantic.

Among the European producers taking part in the event are Macdara Kelleher of Dublin-based Fastnet Films, producer of company partner Lance Daly’s Galway Film Festival winner and Irish box office hit “Kisses,” and Rebecca Daly’s Cannes screener “The Other Side of Sleep”; Nicole Gerhards of Berlin-based NiKo Film, producer of Emily Atef’s “Kill Me” and Paula Markovitch’s Silver Bear-winning “The Prize”; and Arnar Knutsson of Reykjavik-based Filmus Productions, producer of Oskar Thor Axelsson’s “Black’s Game,” which has become the second biggest grossing domestic film in Iceland’s history.

The aim of the initiative is to generate business relationships leading to concrete European-Canadian co-productions and to increase the visibility of the producers and their projects during the fest, according to European Film Promotion, the event’s organizer.

“In a globalized industry, independent European producers are increasingly looking for co-production partners outside Europe who share similar values and perspectives,” EFP said in a statement. “The cosmopolitan population and strong film funding system in Canada make Canadian producers ideal prospects for building creative and financial bridges with Europe.”

EFP organizes Producers Lab in collaboration with Ontario Media Development Corporation and the Toronto Film Festival with support from the European Union’s Media Mundus Program, Eurimages and Telefilm Canada.

The networking platform has already resulted in 27 projects in active development.
