‘Polisse’ outguns ‘Artist’ at Cesars

Cop drama leads Gallic awards race

PARIS — Maiwenn’s ensemble cop drama “Polisse” leads the race for France’s Cesars with 13 nominations, which were announced Friday by Gaul’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist,” which is competing for 10 Oscars, also drew 10 Cesar noms, including film, helmer, actress for Berenice Bejo, actor for Jean Dujardin and original screenplay for Hazanavicius.

Since opening at Cannes and earning an actor nod for Dujardin, “The Artist” has been on a roll, nabbing three Golden Globes and many critics kudos.

The noms for “Polisse,” which chronicles the day-to-day life of cops working in a child protection unit in Paris, included film, director, original screenplay for Maiwenn and Emmanuelle Bercot, and actress for Karin Viard and Marina Fois.

The pic has already won a number of awards, notably Cannes’ jury prize.

Pierre Schoeller’s political drama “The Minister” took 11 nominations, including film, director and original screenplay for Schoeller, and thesp for Olivier Gourmet.

Other contenders in the race include Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s buddy dramedy “Intouchables” with nine noms, and Valerie Donzelli’s dramedy “Declaration of War,” which has six noms. These two films are nommed in both the best pic and director categories, as are Aki Kaurismaki’s “Le Havre” and Alain Cavalier’s “Pater.”

The contenders include some of last year’s biggest local box office hits.

“Intouchables” was Gaul’s third highest B.O. hit ever with $153 million. Weinstein Co. has acquired U.S. distribution and remake rights.

“Polisse” was 2011’s third highest-grossing French movie, making $19.2 million, while “The Artist,” which was recently re-released in France, earned $12.3 million after it opened in October.

“War,” the French candidate in the Oscar’s foreign-language race, failed to make the cut, but has earned a healthy $7 million.

Roman Polanski’s “Carnage,” qualifying due to its French producer and the helmer’s French citizenship, only drew one nomination, for adapted screenplay.

Kate Winslet will be feted during the Cesar ceremony — which takes place on Feb. 24 — with an honorary nod that will be presented by Polanski.

The foreign-language Cesar race will be particularly competitive this year, with “Drive,” “Melancholia,” “The King’s Speech,” “A Separation” and “Incendies” in the running.
