For veteran producer Marc Platt and director Jonathan Demme, “Rachel Getting Married” marked a reunion with old friends from the Orion days 20 years before, when Platt was head of production and Michael Barker and Tom Bernard ran the classics division. Demme made his early films, including “Something Wild” and “Silence of the Lambs,” for Orion.
“It felt very much like going home,” Platt says. “Most of my work after Orion was in the studio system, and it’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve started to make independent films.
“It was relatively smooth. It’s a smaller budget, of course, and we had to make sure we hit it, but beyond that, the making of the film was very easy.”
Platt credits the experience to his shared history with Barker and Bernard. “We were all on the same page,” he says, “familiarity and trust made for a very easygoing experience. There’s a shorthand one has after all those years. Orion was about being very filmmaker-friendly and nurturing, and having an eclectic kind of taste.
“So there’s a shared philosophy based on their trust for the filmmaker, and in return the filmmakers trust them as distributors who know how to navigate a challenging movie. They have an incredibly intuitive sense of how to bring these kinds of movies to the marketplace.”
