How do you take a single book and turn it into another ambitious three-part epic reportedly budgeted at $500 million? For Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the answer was to go back through all of Tolkien’s source material, carefully poring through the appendices the fantasy author used to flesh out the story after he finished the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and weave that backstory and material into “The Hobbit.”
