Patricia Riggen to helm ‘Elsa & Fred’ remake

$8 million adaptation will shoot in New York and Rome

LA-based Mexican director Patricia Riggen, whose Eva Mendes and Matthew Modine starrer “Girl in Progress” opens Friday, is attached to helm the English-language remake of Spanish-Argentine 2005 hit “Elsa & Fred.” Riggen and Michael Bell have co-penned the $8 million adaptation backed by Matthias Ehrenberg’s Rio Negro of Mexico.

U.S. and U.K. companies are set to board the pic. Ehrenberg, Nicolas Veinberg, Jose Levy and Ricardo Kleinbaum are producing the romcom.

“Elsa & Fred” follows a widower and his vivacious new neighbour who discover that it’s never too late to fall in love and realize their dreams.

Principal photography in New York and Rome locations are slated for September.

Riggen is best known for her 2007 feature debut “Under the Same Moon” which sparked a bidding war at Sundance. She has since directed TV movie “Lemonade Mouth” for the Disney Channel and Pantelion’s “Girl in Progress.”
