Toon one of first projects to benefit from Gallic-Sino treaty

France’s Pascal Morelli is set to direct 3D animated feature “Le Prince et 108 Demons” (The Prince and the 108 Demons), inspired by the Chinese novel “Outlaws of the Water Margin.”

TF1 Intl. has taken worldwide sales rights. Gebeka Films will distribute in France.

“Demons” is co-produced by Vincent Roget and Francois Cornuau at Same Player, China’s Fundamental, Belgium’s Scope Pictures and Luxembourg’s Bidibul Prods. It’s one of the first projects to benefit from the French-Chinese co-production treaty.

Set in 12th century China, “Demons” turns on a 10-year-old prince who teams with outlaws to fight the armies of a tyrannical emperor.

The €9.2 million ($11.6 million) toon is co-penned by Morelli and Jean Pecheux. Morelli will lense the martial arts scenes in China this fall and convert them into animation.

Morelli previously helmed Locarno-preeming “Corto Maltese,” an animated feature based on Hugo Pratt’s popular comicbook.

“Demons” will be delivered in summer 2014.
