Horror film to be remastered for simultaneous bow

Moviegoers can get scared Imax-style as the large-format exhibitor is digitally remastering Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity 4″ with plans to release the film starting Thursday, Oct. 18, at 9 p.m. — concurrent with the film’s nationwide bow.

Pic marks the second Imax treatment for the scarer franchise after “Paranormal Activity 2.” The four-quel will launch at roughly 300 digital Imax domestic locations.

The exhib plans to rework the film’s sound and image quality for Imax.

Paranormal Activity 4,” from directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, launches wide domestically on Oct. 19, though Par plans to kick-start the film’s release the evening before with midnight screenings.

This month last year, “Paranormal Activity 3″ earned a franchise-best $8 million from midnights — 30% better than the three-quel’s predecessor — which led into the highest three-day domestic opening for a horror film at $52.6 million.

The “Paranormal Activity” franchise so far has tallied more than $575 million collectively worldwide.
