Outfest honors Waters, opens with ‘Vito’

Fest opens July 12 at downtown L.A.'s Orpheum theater

John Waters will be feted with the 2012 Outfest Achievement Award at the 30th Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. The L.A.-based non-profit dedicated to LGBT media has also announced Jeffrey Schwarz’s docu “Vito” as the opening night gala screening.

Waters will be honored before the unspooling of “Vito” on July 12 at the Orpheum Theater. The presentation will come a day after the filmmaker performs his one-man show “This Filthy World: Gayer and Filthier” in the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever cemetery.

Opening selection tells the story of Vito Russo, a key figure in the gay liberation movement and author of “The Celluloid Closet.”

In celebration of the org’s 30th anniversary, Outfest will also be presenting a monthly screening at the Downtown Independent Theater and unveiling the “Different from the Others” film restoration project with UCLA.

The fest runs from July 12 to 22.
