‘Orheim’ nabs Dragon at Gothenburg

Awards close out Nordic film festival

GOTHENBURG — Helmer Arhild Andresen’s Norwegian coming-of-ager “The Orheim Company” nabbed the Dragon Award for Nordic feature (worth $150,000) on a sub-zero Saturday night as Sweden’s 35th Gothenburg Film Festival drew to a close.

Set in a Norwegian coastal city in 1988, “Orheim” is the third film based on novelist Tore Renberg’s iconic character Jarle Klepp. It depicts a family that is ultimately destroyed by a brutal alcoholic father.

Italian helmer-writer Alice Rohrwacher’s “Corpo Celeste,” a naturalistic look at an adolescent girl preparing for her Catholic confirmation, scored the Ingmar Bergman Debut award.

“She Male Snails,” a mix of docu and fiction from Swedish helmer Ester Martin Bergsmark, was the evenings other big winner. The experimental pic about coming of age as a transgender person took the Kodak Nordic Vision award (worth $75,000) for its unique and provocative visual style, as well as the audience award for the Nordic section.

Meanwhile, German helmer Andreas Dresen’s “Stopped on Track” nabbed the audience award for feature.

Among other kudos, helmer Sara Broos took best Swedish documentary for “For You Naked,” the Church of Sweden prized comedy “Flicker” from helmer Patrik Eklund, and the Fipresci international critics’ prize fell to “Sons of Norway,” helmed by Jens Lien.

The fest, Sweden’s biggest film event, offered 729 films from 80 countries.
