“Only the Young” has won the Sterling Award for best U.S. feature at the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival.
“Only the Young,” directed by Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, film follows three teens stuck in a chaste love triangle in a depressed Southern California suburb. The prize is accompanied by a $5,000 cash award. The week-long festival included the screening of 114 films representing 44 countries, a free outdoor screening, live performances and a five-day professional documentary conference. The Sterling Award for world feature went to “Planet of Snail,” directed by Seungiun Yi and centering on the deaf and blind South Korean poet Young-Chan The Sterling Award for best short Film was given to “Kings Point,” directed by Sari Gilman. A special U.S. feature jury mention went to “The Waiting Room,” directed by Peter Nicks. The world feature jury gave a mention to “Special Flight,” directed by Fernand Melgar.
