New Wave acquires ‘Caesar’

U.K. distrib picks up 'Tabu,' 'Wand'

LONDON — New Wave Films has acquired U.K. rights to Berlin Golden Bear winner “Caesar Must Die” by Italian helmers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani.

This semi-documentary about prisoners in Rome’s high security jail staging a performance of “Julius Caesar” also won the Ecumenical Prize in the main Berlin competition.

New Wave, run by arthouse veterans Robert Beeson and Pam Engel, picked up two other titles in Berlin.

“Tabu” by Portugal’s Miguel Gomes, is the story of an illicit colonial love affair. It won the Fipresci International Critics Prize and Alfred Bauer Prize for Innovation.

Austrian director Julian Roman Poelsler’s “The Wand,” described as a contemporary female Robinson Crusoe story starring Martina Gedeck, took the Ecumenical Prize in the Panorama sidebar.
