Munich to honor Melanie Griffith

'The Grief Tourist' preeming at fest

BERLIN — The Munich Film Festival is to fete actress Melanie Griffith with its CineMerit Award and a showcase of her films.

The fest, which runs June 29 – July 7, will present Griffith’s latest work, Suri Krishnamma’s psychological thriller “The Grief Tourist,” as a world premiere.

In addition, a selection of four films will unspool as part of event’s homage to the actress: Jonathan Demme’s “Something Wild,” Mike Nichols’ “Working Girl,” Mike Figgis’ “Stormy Monday” and Fernando Trueba’s “Two Much.”

“Like no other American actress of her generation, Melanie Griffith perfectly embodies the term ‘Hollywood,’ ” said Munich fest topper Diana Iljine. “She is an international star with a career that has been both luminous and eventful.”

Griffith has appeared in more than 40 films, including Arthur Penn’s “Night Moves,” Brian De Palma’s “Body Double” and Robert Redford’s “The Milagro Beanfield War.”

Griffith will be on hand in Munich to accept the prize, which honors outstanding personalities in international cinema, on July 3.
