At least one person at Thursday’s “Sparkle” preem was also there in 1976 when the original pic unspooled.
“The original was a small little vehicle that brought Joel Schumacher and me out to Hollywood,” Howard Rosenman recalled at the Chinese. He’s exec producer on the current TriStar pic, but produced the first one and got a “story by” credit. Schumacher was screenwriter then; Mara Brock Akil penned and co-produced the 2012 pic.
At the Roosevelt Hotel afterparty, Rosenman compared the two versions. “They’re very different,” he opined. “There was some victimization in the original, but with this movie they’ve created a woman empowerment movie. It’s less innocent, it’s a little more sophisticated.”
Rosenman went on to trade hugs and memories with Cissy Houston and Bobbi Kristina Brown, who also seemed very happy with the pic starring Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston.
