Comic will emcee indie award ceremony
Writer-director and standup comic Mike Birbiglia has been tapped to host the 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards.
Gig for Birbiglia (“You Sister’s Sister”) comes just after the theatrical bow of the IFC release in which he starred, “Sleepwalk with Me,” a comedy he also co-directed and co-wrote. The indie, also starring Lauren Ambrose, was based on the comic’s solo show, which proved an Off Broadway success in 2008 and was later adapted into a book.
The Independent Filmmaker Project’s indie-centric Gotham Awards help kick off the fall kudo season with laurels handed out to pics that often go on to gain recognition in subsequent trophy races. Ceremony has ignited awards heat for past movies including “The Hurt Locker” and “Winter’s Bone.”
Birbiglia will host an evening that doles out six competitive awards and an audience kudo, and also will fete a handful of tribute honorees, still to be set.
Nominations for the Gothams are set to be announced Oct. 18 ahead of a Nov. 26 ceremony.
