Mia Wasikowska heads Down Under for ‘Tracks’

Actress to star in pic for 'King's Speech' producers

Mia Wasikowska is set to star in the indie drama “Tracks,” produced by “The King’s Speech” duo Emile Sherman and Iain Canning.

John Curran (“The Painted Veil”) directs the pic, which tells the true story of how a young woman, Robyn Davidson, traveled more than 1,678 miles through the Australian desert in 1977.

Script is based on Davidson’s memoir of the same name and is produced through Sherman and Canning’s See-Saw Films banner. HanWay Films, which is repping international sales on the pic, has already sold the pic to Alliance Films’ Brit arm Momentum Pictures for the U.K. — Momentum has a first-look deal with See-Saw — Transmission for Australia and New Zealand, Ascot Elite for Switzerland and BIM for Italy.

The territorial sales complete the financing for the pic alongside Screen Australia and Aver Media.

HanWay Films sold See-Saw’s last pic “Shame,” helmed by Steve McQueen, to a raft of countries.

“John is an incredibly talented filmmaker and we feel the story of one woman, transforming her life by attempting the impossible, is both universal and timely,” said Sherman and Canning.

Davidson, who was celebrated internationally as “The Camel Lady,” was accompanied on her journey by her four camels and dog while the trip was documented through the photography of Rick Smolan, who covered the journey for the National Geographic magazine.

Pic is skedded to lense in Australia in the fall.

Wasikowska is repped by WME and RGM Artist Group.
