MEXICO CITY — Mexican box office was up 12.33% year-to-year in the first six months of 2012, according to a mid-year report from national film industry chamber Canacine.

Thanks in part to a general increase in ticket prices, receipts expanded markedly to 5.98 billion pesos ($451 million) during the first six months from 4.70 billion pesos in the year-earlier period, hinging largely on the massive success of “The Avengers,” which sold more than 7 million tickets for box office of about $60 million, followed by “Madagascar 3″ ($24 million) and “Clash of the Titans 2″ ($16 million).

Admissions grew 11% in the first semester of the year to 109 million.

The advances reflect a general growth in the Mexican economy over the term. Mexico’s Finance Secretariat reported Monday that the local economy saw GDP grow some 4% in the first half of 2012, well outstripping the tepid growth Stateside.

As usual, U.S. tentpoles far outshined performance from local fare, but the Canacine report singled out some local pics for impressive results. Winning the top spot, big-budget Cristero War drama “For the Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada” (“Cristiada” locally) weighed in with an admirable $4.2 million in Mexico.

Failed-education-system docu “De panzazo,” helmed by “In the Pit” director Juan Carlos Rulfo, pulled in $3.6 million, and the much smaller-budgeted political biopic “Colosio el asesinato,” which detailed the 1994 assassination of shoo-in presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, earned $3.3 million despite a limited June release.
