Memento takes Kim’s ‘Ellen’ for France

Deal follows Sundance screening

PARIS — Memento Films Distribution has acquired French rights to “For Ellen,” the third film from So Yong Kim (“In Between Days,” “Treeless Mountain”).

Playing to upbeat reviews in Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Competition last week, East Coast-set “Ellen” stars Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “Meek’s Cutoff”) as a struggling rock musician making a last-ditch attempt to gain shared custody of his daughter Ellen.

Memento sealed French distribution at Sundance after “Ellen’s” screening.

Deal consolidates Memento’s relationship with Kim: foreign sales arm Memento Films Intl. repped “Treeless Mountain.”

MFI picked up international on “Ellen” at script stage and has had it on its sales slate for at least a year.

Also starring “Napoleon Dynamite’s” Jon Heder, cast against type as the rock musician’s straight-laced lawyer, “Ellen” is a step up in star power for Kim.

MFI’s “Ellen” sales push will focus from next week on the Berlin Film Festival, where “Ellen” screens in the Forum section.
