Maximillian Schell to topline Marx biopic

Algeria to finance 30% of the budget

Maximilian Schell will topline a Karl Marx biopic about his last days in Algeria.

Cinema Libre Studio and the Algerian Ministry of Culture announced Thursday in Cannes that they have finalized a co-production deal to produce the feature film.

The deal between Los Angeles-based Cinema Libre Studio and the Algerian Agency for Cultural Influence is touted as the first-ever co-production agreement between Algeria and an American company.

Algeria will finance 30% of the $3.5 million budget, and production will start this fall. The film will be directed by French producer-director Philippe Diaz (“The End of Poverty?”)

Mario Adorf (“The Tin Drum”) will play Frederic Engels, and Pierre-Loup Rajout (“A Nos Amours”) will play the French colonial Judge Albert Ferme.

“Karl Marx, at the end of his life, is a fascinating role for me,” Schell said. “And his humor makes him even more interesting.”

Marx was born in 1818 and published “The Communist Manifesto” in 1848. His health began declining in the 1870s, and he died in 1883.

Half the production will be shot in Algeria, with AARC acting as co-producer. The agency co-produced eight feature films last year.

Cinema Libre has released pics including “Fuel,” “The End of Poverty?” and Oliver Stone’s “South of the Border.” The studio is developing John Perkins’ memoirs “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” into a motion picture.
