‘Man’ on top at Friday B.O.

Sony/Screen Gems' laffer earns $12.2 mil to best newcomers

Meeting and exceeding pre-weekend estimates, Sony/Screen Gems’ “Think Like a Man” took $12.2 million at the domestic B.O., roughly matching the pic’s budget and setting it on course to gross about $30 million this frame.

At this rate, “Man” is looking to become Screen Gems’ third number one opening of the year after “Underworld Awakening” and “The Vow.” The romantic laffer, based on Steve Harvey’s book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” is performing well because it specifically targets an African American demo that hasn’t been serviced since the Tyler Perry-produced “Good Deeds” in February.

Also, crowds seem to be enjoying it. Pic earned an A+ Cinemascore from both men and auds under 25, and an A overall.

In second, Warner Bros.’ Nicholas Sparks adaptation “The Lucky One” is playing well at $9.1 million Friday domestically. Also performing a little ahead of pre-weekend estimates, “Lucky One” should land just north of $20 million through Sunday.

Reigning champ “The Hunger Games” from Lionsgate fell to third with $4 million. Down only about 38% since last Friday, the actioner should collect a figure in the low teens this frame. Its current Stateside cume is $346.4 million.

Disneynature docu “Chimpanzee” opened to $3.5 million, right in line with last year’s entry “African Cats.” It should gross between $6 million and $7 million this frame.

Another Lionsgate holdover rounds out the top five. “Cabin in the Woods” earned $2.5 million on Friday, bringing its current total to $21.7 million.
